Activity 2.3 : How to Do a "No-Stress" Library Audit

A gentle way to notice who’s missing —and who’s included —in your child’s reading world.

The goal for this audit is awareness. You’re just taking a friendly look at where the gaps might be in your collection.

It’s a 10-minute check-in!

The 10-Book Stack Challenge

1. Gather:

Pull 10–15 books at random from your child’s bookshelf. Don’t overthink it.

2. Stack:

Place them on the floor.

3. Scan :

Look only at the main characters on the covers or in the first few pages.

4. Ask :
  • Who do you see?

  • Are they mostly animals instead of people?

  • Are all the children the same? Are they like you? Are they different from you? How?

  • Do they all seem to have the same kind of family ?

  • Do they all appear able-bodied?

That’s it!

If your stack looks similar from book to book, you’ve simply found your “gap.”

✨ Celebrate what’s already there, and then use that awareness to add new voices.

Next time you’re at the library, look for a story featuring someone different from those in your current stack.

What a wonderful opportunity to expand your child’s world — one story at a time.
