From Chaos to Connection
Book Swap Starter Kit
From Words That Bloom • Lesson 5.4
Starting a book swap doesn’t need to be complicated. This kit gives you everything you need to start small and simple.
Three Ways to Start
Choose the option that feels most doable for you right now:
Option 1: Two-Family Private Swap
The easiest place to start—just you and one other family.
- Text or message ONE friend or family member
- Say: “We have 3 books we’re done with. Want to swap for any of yours?”
- Trade books next time you see each other (or by mail!)
- Keep it informal—no tracking needed
Best for: Busy families who want the easiest entry point
Option 2: Front Porch/Lobby Library
Perfect if you have neighbors or live in an apartment building.
- Find a weatherproof box, basket, or small shelf
- Put 3-5 books in it that you’re done with
- Add a simple sign: “Take one, leave one! Free books for all ages.”
- Check weekly and refresh with new books
Best for: Families who want to build neighborhood connections
Option 3: Grandparent/Extended Family Book Connection
Great for families spread across distance.
- Mail or drop off ONE book to grandparent/aunt/uncle
- Include a note: “We loved this book! Let’s talk about it next time we chat.”
- Schedule a 10-minute call/video chat to discuss favorite parts
- Ask them to send a book back for you to read
Best for: Maintaining connections with loved ones far away
Book Swap Tracking Sheet (Optional)
Only use this if you want to track books—most swaps don’t need it!
