Practice: The “Pause & Wonder”
A tiny experiment in calm curiosity
Why it matters:
When reading gets tense, our instinct is to correct or explain. But each time we pause before reacting, we teach our child that mistakes are moments to notice, not moments to fear. This short experiment helps you practice curiosity instead of criticism—one sentence at a time.
Step 1 ~ Notice the Moment
During a reading session, watch for a small sign of frustration—maybe your child sighs, skips a word, or looks away.
Before you say anything, take one slow breath.
Step 2 ~ Wonder Out Loud
Instead of correcting, say something like:
“Hmm… I wonder what made that tricky today.”
“That word surprised us—what do you think happened there?”
“Let’s figure it out together.”
This tiny pause and gentle language shift signals safety and partnership.
Step 3 ~ Reflect Right After
Once the moment passes, jot down a quick note.
🌸 Reflection
Choose one sentence to complete:
-
When I paused, my child… (e.g., relaxed / laughed / kept trying / asked for help)
-
I noticed that pausing made me feel… (e.g., calmer / more patient / less pressured)
-
Next time, I want to remember… (e.g., to smile before speaking).
Build awareness of how curiosity changes the emotional tone of reading.
