π§ DAILY READING ANCHOR PLANNER
Building Tiny Literacy Habits That Stick
π― THE CONCEPT
Attach 2-5 minute literacy moments to things you ALREADY do every day. This is how habits stick!
Formula: Existing Daily Routine + Tiny Literacy Moment = Lasting Reading Habit
π STEP 1: MAP YOUR DAILY ANCHORS
List the things you do EVERY SINGLE DAY without fail:
β Wake up
β Breakfast
β Get dressed
β Brush teeth
β School/daycare drop-off
β Car rides
β Meal prep/cooking
β Lunch
β Snack time
β Play time
β Grocery shopping/errands
β After-school pickup
β Dinner
β Bath time
β Bedtime routine
β Other: ___________________
β Other: ___________________
Circle 2-3 that feel most reliable and relaxed.
π― STEP 2: CHOOSE YOUR FIRST ANCHOR
My first anchor will be: _________________________________________________
Why I chose this: (Check all that apply)
β We do this every single day
β This time already feels somewhat relaxed
β We’re already together during this time
β We’re not super rushed
β This feels natural for my family
β Other: _____________________________
π STEP 3: PLAN YOUR TINY LITERACY MOMENT
For my chosen anchor, I will: (Choose ONE to start!)
If your anchor is BREAKFAST:
β Place book basket on table
β Read cereal box together
β Share comic strip from newspaper/phone
β Put “word of the day” sticky note on table
β Flip through one picture book while they eat
β Play “I spy a letter” with food boxes
β Other: _____________________________
If your anchor is GETTING DRESSED:
β Read words on their t-shirt
β Make silly rhymes about socks/shoes
β Sing alphabet song while buttoning
β Count clothing items together
β “What letter does ‘shoes’ start with?”
β Other: _____________________________
If your anchor is CAR RIDE:
β Play “I Spy” with letter sounds
β Listen to audiobook or story podcast
β Read road signs together
β Sing alphabet or nursery rhymes
β Pull out “travel pack” book during wait
β Other: _____________________________
If your anchor is MEAL PREP/COOKING:
β Read simple recipe together
β Identify numbers on measuring cups
β Read food package labels
β Count ingredients
β Create menu together with pictures/words
β Other: _____________________________
If your anchor is BATH TIME:
β Use foam letters to spell on tub wall
β Share waterproof bath books
β Sing songs during washing
β Write letters in shampoo foam
β Play “what starts with /b/?” (bubbles, bath…)
β Other: _____________________________
If your anchor is BEDTIME:
β Read 1-3 books from bedside basket
β Share “best part of day” stories
β Sing lullabies or bedtime poems
β Look at pictures and talk
β Classic calm storytime
β Other: _____________________________
If your anchor is WALKING/TRANSITIONS:
β Clap syllables in names and objects
β Make up silly rhymes
β Count steps or items we see
β Play “rhyme time”
β Letter sound hunt (“I spy /b/…”)
β Other: _____________________________
π οΈ STEP 4: GATHER MATERIALS (If Needed)
What do I need to make this happen?
β Book basket or container
β 3-5 books for basket
β Sticky notes for labels or “word of the day”
β Foam letters for bath
β Ziplock bag for travel pack
β Waterproof books
β Nothing – just my voice and attention!
β Other: _____________________________
Where will I keep these materials?
π STEP 5: SET UP YOUR TRIGGER
My trigger statement:
“After I _____________________________ (existing daily action),
I will _____________________________ (tiny literacy moment).”
Example: “After I pour breakfast cereal, I will place the book basket on the table.”
Example: “After I buckle my child in the car, I will start our audiobook.”
Example: “After I turn on bath water, I will stick foam letters on the tub wall.”
π STEP 6: TRACK YOUR FIRST 2 WEEKS
Week 1:
| Day | Did I do my anchor? | What happened? |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Tue | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Wed | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Thu | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Fri | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Sat | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Sun | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
Week 1 Reflection:
What worked well: _________________________________________________________
What was challenging: _____________________________________________________
Adjustments needed: _______________________________________________________
Week 2:
| Day | Did I do my anchor? | What happened? |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Tue | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Wed | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Thu | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Fri | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Sat | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
| Sun | β Yes β No β Forgot | ______________ |
Week 2 Reflection:
Does this anchor feel automatic yet? β Yes β Getting there β Still working on it
Child’s response: _________________________________________________________
My confidence level: β High β Medium β Low
Ready to add second anchor? β Yes! β Not yet – will master this first
π― STEP 7: ADD SECOND ANCHOR (OPTIONAL)
Only add if first anchor feels automatic!
My second anchor will be: _____________________________________________
My tiny literacy moment: _____________________________________________
Materials needed: _____________________________________________________
My trigger statement:
“After I _____________________________, I will _____________________________.”
π‘ TROUBLESHOOTING
If you keep forgetting your anchor:
β Is trigger clear enough? Make it more specific
β Move materials to more visible location
β Set phone reminder for first few days
β Put sticky note where you’ll see it
β Choose a more reliable anchor
If child isn’t engaging:
β Keep it available but don’t force
β Model using it yourself
β Try different books/materials
β Make it more playful
β This anchor might not be right fit – try another
If it feels like a chore:
β Simplify it even more
β Remove pressure – it’s not a lesson!
β Focus on joy, not “doing it right”
β Take a break and try again later
β This might not be the right time
π SUCCESS INDICATORS
You’ll know your anchor is working when:
β You do it without thinking about it
β Child starts expecting it
β Child asks for it if you forget
β It feels natural, not forced
β You’ve done it 5+ days in a row
β It takes minimal effort
π MICRO-MOMENT MATH
Let’s add it up!
If I do my anchor habit for 5 minutes…
5 days a week = 25 minutes weekly = 1,300 minutes yearly (21+ hours!)
6 days a week = 30 minutes weekly = 1,560 minutes yearly (26 hours!)
7 days a week = 35 minutes weekly = 1,820 minutes yearly (30+ hours!)
And that’s just ONE anchor!
If you eventually build 2-3 anchors, you could easily create 50-75 hours of literacy exposure per year – just from tiny daily moments!

Don’t change the anchor itself! The consistency of WHEN is what makes it stick.
β QUICK START CHECKLIST
To start your first anchor TODAY:
β Choose ONE daily anchor from your routine
β Decide your 2-5 minute literacy moment
β Gather any materials needed (or use nothing!)
β Set up your trigger: “After ___, I will ___”

β Keep it tiny (2-5 minutes!)
β Make it playful, not “educational”
β Let your child ignore it some days
β Take breaks if it feels forced
β Change anchors if first choice doesn’t fit
β Not add a second anchor – one is enough!
